Why should I care about my nervous system? The nervous system is the major regulation, control and communication system in the body-- essentially the command center. Stress and vicarious trauma can trigger fight, flight and freeze responses when you are not in dangerous or life-threatening situations. These responses redirect your biological resources away from higher brain functioning and social connection capacity when you need to be present, clear and aware--and are often at odds with long-term health needs, personal values and professional goals. Nervous system hygiene practices apply conscious care to the body's subconscious processes in order to reduce the mental and physical impact of stress reponses, enable a quicker return to center during stressful interactions, and avoid unintentional/harmful behavior with clients, community and loved ones.

Who is this class for? This class is for facilitators and leaders across all sectors-- organizers, lawyers, teachers, artists --anyone who holds space for, tends to, manages or organizes community in conflict, collaboration or creation. Stress and vicarious trauma, not only impacts the person with direct exposure, but has real consequences for family and professional relationships. This class is for anyone looking for techniques for improve their personal wellbeing as well as minimize the impact of stress on their family and community. This class will particularly benefit anyone who must remain centered and aware while supporting and guiding others.

What can I expect? Participants will learn practices for preparing their system for facilitating/leading, tending to their nervous system in while actively engaging with others, and caring for their nervous system afterward. They will learn some foundational science and theory in order to understand how the practices work, so that they can be adapted to personal and professional goals/circumstances.
