About this event

The 1940s—a decade of resilience, unity, and unforgettable music. As swing, big band, and jazz filled the airwaves, classic Hollywood films lit up the silver screen, and radio brought families together in living rooms across America. Meanwhile, across the world, history was being written in the largest conflict ever seen.

In 1945, the Allied victory brought World War II to an end, marking a turning point in history and ushering in a new era of hope. Through it all, music was a source of comfort and connection, bringing people together across great distances and uncertain times. As it did then, so it will now—join us as we honor this momentous time with the songs that lifted a generation. From the big band sound of Glenn Miller to heartfelt ballads and patriotic anthems, this performance will transport you back to a time when music united us all.

Don’t miss this special celebration of the 1940s and the enduring songs that continue to inspire, 80 years after the war’s end.

Frequently asked questions

What is the America the Beautiful Chorus?

The America the Beautiful (or ATB) Chorus is a chorus of men based right here in Colorado Springs. We're amateur singers but don't let that fool you, we work hard to put on a good show and sing well! Though primarily a barbershop chorus, we sing all sorts of a cappella music.

What is barbershop music?

In short, barbershop is an a cappella musical style leaning heavily on the pop music of the early 1900s, but always evolving and interpreting new music. Barbershop is sung in 4-part harmony. The name is a reference to men of yore gathering at the barbershop where sometimes singing would break out!

Can I join the chorus?

Absolutely! Men are invited to join us any given Tuesday for rehearsal. See www.atbchorus.com for details. Men of all musical backgrounds (or none), ages, faiths, races, orientations, or any other category are welcome!

Are you affiliated with the venue (Sunrise United Methodist Church)?

While we're fortunate to call SUMC our home for concerts, and indeed some of our members are parishioners, we are not affiliated with the church or any religious organization. We're affiliated with the Barbershop Harmony Society and the ideals of making the world better through music!

What is an ATB show like?

Shows are held in the sanctuary with open (pew) seating. You'll hear from an emcee, the chorus, and usually some quartets. The show is split into two parts, with a brief intermission. Plan for about 2 hours of runtime, but it varies.

Organized by

The America the Beautiful Chorus is the performing group of the Colorado Springs/Pikes Peak Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Chartered in 1946, the chapter puts on two major shows per year, in the Spring and at Christmas, and performs for many local organizations throughout the year.
