About this event

The library at the Institute for Art and Olfaction contains half a dozen perfume box sets: collections of compounded scents organized around a theme. In this session, IAO Library curator Charles Rosenberg presents the set produced by IFF with Odeuropa between 2020 and 2023. The twelve scents in this collection present historical recreations of aromatic associatons with paintings housed in various museums. Scents include Pomander, Myrrh, Canal, Waterloo, Hell... and many more.

Participants will get to smell as many of the scents as time allows, in a group setting. The discussion will focus on the impressions of the perfumes and their concordance with their accompanying images and texts. This smelling session will be a special opportunity to experience a project that was made to encourage scent in the context of museums, to "provide a starting point for cultural heritage professionals using smell as a storytelling technique."
