As more of our everyday experiences are conducted using smooth -- even touchless -- screens where ideas and actions float invisibly over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other technologies in “the cloud”, how do all of these now ethereal actions impact meaning interpretation and meaning creation? How do these changes affect our relationship with the rest of the 3+ dimensional material world we live in?

We welcome papers from anyone whose work is related to semiotic thinking and analysis. We especially appreciate Case Studies relevant to the theme, interesting frameworks with use cases, or provocative think pieces relevant to the theme.

This year's theme is Materiality and Humanity in the Cloud Age.

Sub-topics of interest are Materiality and

Our relationship to Nature's substances, processes, systems

Our relationship to the Manufactured stuff of life, signs and meanings around artificial substances new and old

The role of our senses, our bodies on our humanity

How products/brands are responding and implications of leaning into the tangible or away toward the ephemeral and ethereal

Implications of the Cloud Age on meaning creation and evolution now and in the future

Abstracts should be no more than 500 words.

  • Main premise of your paper as it relates to the theme
  • Name, title, company
  • Email, phone for text and preferred way to reach you
  • 2-3 ideas from your paper that will inspire or challenge people's thinking on the theme

Presenters will have up to 20 minutes to present with 5 minutes Q&A so please plan your presentations accordingly. Typical rule of thumb is 1 minute per slide so 15-18 slide max is a guide to follow.

Our Call fo Papers will close on March 7, 2025. You'll be informed on the status of your paper by March 31, 2025.

We are also planning to finalize a venue and start ticket sales in mid-late March.
