m\other

Featuring artists Tanya Aguiñiga, Marthe Aponte, Zackary Drucker, Gina Herrera, and Nike Schroeder, m\other centers fiber and textile-based practices to challenge and expand traditional ideas of matriarchy, femininity, and care.

Through intimate, nuanced works rooted in queer, Indigenous, and spiritual experiences, these artists reimagine what it means to mother—and to nurture, create, and carry forward resilience.

Act on It! Artists, Community, and the Brockman Gallery in Los Angeles

Act on It! Artists, Community, and the Brockman Gallery in Los Angeles is an inspiring exhibition that pays tribute to the power of art, community, and cultural activism. In 1967, artists and brothers Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis founded the Brockman Gallery in Leimert Park, creating what is believed to be Los Angeles’ first Black-owned and operated art gallery. Sparked by the cultural energy following the 1965 Watts Rebellion, the Brockman Gallery became a pivotal space for artists of color—nurturing a generation of creatives who would go on to shape American art and social consciousness. Act on It! features a powerful selection of paintings, prints, and sculptures from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s collection, originally shown at or influenced by the Brockman Gallery. Organized around six thematic pillars—Roots, Material Experimentation, Body & Identity, Common Ground, Civic Engagement, and Uplift—the exhibition highlights the experimental spirit and community-driven ethos of the gallery.

Artists featured include:
Alonzo and Dale Brockman Davis, David Hammons, Betye Saar, Charles White, La Monte Westmoreland, Carrie Mae Weems, and more.

This exhibition was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in collaboration with the Lancaster Museum of Art & History; Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College; and California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Local Access is a series of American art exhibitions created through a multi-year, multi-institutional partnership formed by LACMA as part of the Art Bridges Cohort Program.
