Organizing Toward Palestinian Liberation

About Zahra

Zahra Sakkejha was born and raised in Toronto to Palestinian parents. With a decade of experience working in scientific research and genomics, she will be starting medical school this fall. While her true passion is science, she felt a deep calling to activism, striving to use her privilege to contribute to the cause of Palestinian liberation.

Zahra serves on the board of Tomorrow’s Women, an organization that empowers young Palestinian and Israeli women to become compassionate leaders. She is also on the Steering Committee for LA Supporters of Standing Together, a grassroots movement uniting Palestinians and Israelis in the pursuit of peace, justice, safety, and equality. Recently, she co-founded Dialogue in the Diaspora, a local initiative fostering facilitated conversations about Israel-Palestine. Additionally, she is a 2024-2025 NewGround Professional Change-Maker Fellow.

She hopes for a future where peace activists are no longer needed—where she can simply be a doctor who happens to be Palestinian, not the other way around.

Sovern LA is an intersectional community center and gallery, located in LA’s West Adams district, focused on supporting Black and Indigenous women and gender expansive people of color. Fueled by a passion for justice, equality, and creative expression, Sovern is driven by the collective determination to center healing justice, challenge systemic barriers, empower artists of color, and amplify their impact for collective wellbeing. By building a community that uplifts and celebrates diverse voices, we aim to reshape the art world in Los Angeles and beyond, creating a more inclusive and equitable space where artists and communities can thrive together.
