Explore the dynamics of industry/university collaborative applied research, including how university research faculty and student researchers can help bring new technologies from the lab to the marketplace.

Brian Apkarian, the Director of Business Development at the Center for Future Energy Systems (CFES) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), will lead this overview session on Empire State Development’s Centers for Advanced Technology (CATs) and their mission to help NYS companies increase revenue, reduce costs, and win federal research grants.

CFES works with startups all the way to Fortune 100 companies in areas including renewable energy, energy storage, smart-grid, fuel cell, green hydrogen, and energy efficient technologies. It also works closely with other centers on campus such as RPI's Manufacturing Innovation Center to deliver proof of concept, prototype development, design for manufacturability, modeling and simulation, materials testing, and more. And, for NYS companies, CFES can often provide cost-share.

Attendees in this session will:

  • Understand the process for working with a university research center.
  • Learn about the resources available from NYS Centers for Advanced Technology and Centers of Excellence.
  • Hear from startups who have successfully engaged with university researchers, including Berardo Matalucci, Co-Founder and CEO of MIMiC Systems, and Miles Flamenbaum, CEO at Actasys.

This is a virtual workshop. Details to join via Zoom will be shared with all registrants.
