About this event

Check "update my portfolio" off your list.

Portfolio Spot Check is a series of guided meetings for designers who've been putting off updating their portfolio for way too long. You have your portfolio mostly done, but your latest work isn't up and you know you could write about it better.

When you join PSC you commit to attending one hour-long meeting a week for three weeks, with two other designers and your host. These meetings give you a deadline to get the work done by, and sharing updates with each other keeps you accountable. You also get 1:1 feedback from your host, Margot Trudell (more below).

We use a step by step, templated system to figure out your goals, who your portfolio is speaking to, and what changes will help you reach those goals. Using a template makes writing about your work much easier, and ensures you include all the info people want to see.

*** [BONUS] Now you also get our easy to follow template for writing a strategic About page ***

We're not building a portfolio from scratch, and we're not creating new projects to add. These meetings are about freshening up your portfolio - a spot check - and getting it ready to be seen. Whether you're embarking on a job hunt, getting press for your work, or just want your portfolio to be ready when you need it, PSC gives you accountability and deadlines so you finally get it done.

Your Host

Margot Trudell is the Founder and Director of Toronto Design Directory, and a professional graphic designer and art director of over a decade. She's spent her career primarily focused on digital design and marketing, while working across the boutique design, advertising, and tech industries. She's been leading the TDD since 2012, organizing events like Portfolio Review Night, Swash & Serif, and Cool Concept, and helped thousands of people with their portfolios and careers.

Accountability Meetings

We meet once a week for three weeks, and all our meetings run from 12pm - 1pm. When you register, choose the right ticket for the time that you want. Make sure you'll be available at these times - there are no refunds for missed meetings, and no makeup meetings.

Frequently asked questions

Why are there only three spots per session?

We want everybody to have ample time to speak about and discuss their work in each meeting, so we're keeping it small. More seats may be added as the program evolves.

Where do we meet?

Virtually! All three meetings will be held on Google Meet. Meeting links will be shared after ticket purchase.

This time doesn't work for me, can you run this another time?

We're still testing out what works best for everybody. Let us know what times you prefer and we'll take that into account when planning the next session.

Are you going to run this again?

Yes! We're taking our time to evolve this program by learning what people need as we go, so you'll see another round of this program soon with some slight tweaks. Follow us on Instagram (@torontodesigndirectory) or sign up for our newsletter at torontodesigndirectory.com for updates.

Is this the same as Portfolio Review Night?

No. Portfolio Spot Check isn't a review, it's a process of updating your portfolio. We're not going to go through every page of your site to find all the parts that need polishing. You bring your updates and issues to the group and we help each other complete the work.

I don't have a portfolio, is this program good for building one from scratch?

No, this event is about updating a portfolio that is already live and that's where we're focusing our time. We may put out a program for building a new portfolio in the future.

What if I can't attend all the meetings?

We encourage you to register for this program only when you're able to fully commit to it. With only three meetings, there isn't time to catch up on a missed meeting. There are no refunds for missed meetings.
