About this event

  • 3 hours

Enjoy a peaceful Saturday afternoon with us, where we'll combine both teachings and explore this traditional art by making your own 108-bead mala to take home with you.

We begin with a teaching with Kadampa teacher Janice, who will give an explaination to the meaning and purpose of mantras, and learn how to use a Buddhist mala in conjunction with mantra recitation to improve your peace of mind, compassion and wisdom. This will be followed by a practical hands-on workshop where you can make your own mala. (Beads and craft equipment provided).

After everyone has completed making their malas, in the final session, you will receive a mantra to recite and learn how to use and bless your mala.

What is a mala?

A mala is a string of beads used to count prayers or mantra recitations. This is a simple practice that easily connects us with the good qualities of all enlightened beings, and helps us to realize our highest potential. For Buddhist practitioners, their mala is a very precious and meaningful object.

What are mantras?

Mantra is a Sanskrit word, literally meaning `mind protection’. Mantra gives our mind focus and purity and so we are protected from distraction and negative thoughts. Mantras are special, sacred sounds that embody wisdom and compassion we can recite them at any time and we will quickly find we are able to transform our mind to a positive state.
