WIND IN THE LEAVES COLLECTIVE presents Mallo Nights:

The excitement of dance, the music of poetry, the intimacy of duets over wine, beer, and nocturnal spirits. These events will highlight emerging/professional poets and dancers working together for the first time for an intimate evening of performance at Mallo Coffee & Bar - 785 Bathurst Street just south of Bloor.

This special evening will highlight two poets and two dancers performing in the unique space of Mallo Coffee & Bar. The night will feature...

POET - Roshan James (she/her) is a Tibetan-Indian multidisciplinary artist, poet, and musician, living as a settler in southwestern Ontario. As part of the South Asian diaspora, Roshan researches and experiments to create work that embodies decolonization, identity, and timelessness. Entrenched in her work is anti-oppression advocacy and representation of marginalized, queer, and melanated voices to help dismantle colonial, capitalistic systems. As a vocalist, musician, and sound composer, Roshan is a recipient of a 2023 Canada Council for the Arts grant. She is deeply involved in advocating for mental health and the arts - Roshan is on the Board of Governors for Lutherwood Canada, and she volunteers with the Waterloo Region Community Foundation. Roshan holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from York University, summa cum laude. You'll find her on social media, most active on Instagram at @roshan_james.

DANCER - Sarah Di Iorio is a dancer and choreographer. She has performed with Red Sky Performance at the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, Festival Des Arts De Saint-Sauver, and toured with the company throughout North America. Recently she has performed in a duet by Angela Blumberg for Din of Shadows, as a soloist in Canadian Stage’s Dance in High Park Series, in Little Pear Garden’s film The 5 Elements, and their full-length show Spectrum of Connection. Sarah has choreographed for the Fall for Dance North Festival, ABD’s DaCo Residency, and Theatre Oculus’ Fringe Festival film Venus and Adonis. She is thrilled to continue her practice through Mallo Nights with the Wind in the Leaves Collective!

POET - Karyn Inder (also known as Fig) is a confessional poet from Newfoundland, Canada, whose powerful and evocative writing reflects her deeply personal experiences with mental health disorders, chronic pain and disability. Drawing inspiration from her journey and experiences, Karyn explores the intricacies of the human psyche and the complexities of the lightness and darkness of the human condition. Currently residing in Toronto's east end, Karyn's focus lies in her well-being, writing and her newfound love for acting. When she is not found in coffee shops (engrossed in her thoughts while sipping on iced chai lattes) Karyn's magnetic presence and emotionally charged performances can be found at community poetry readings and slams.

DANCER - Eden Bakunawa C.L. (they/them) is an emerging multidisciplinary creator based out of Tkaronto and their work focuses on the play between emotion and body to discover the power of reconnection. As a self-taught interpretive artist with ballet and contemporary experience, they are passionate about experimenting with precolonial- philippine-dance-inspired movement, improvisational/ritual theatre, and choreopoetry. They enjoy learning about how to refer to trauma-informed practices and breathwork to interpret the nature of transformation and rebirth in diasporic as well as queer contexts, through poetry and movement.
