Kahil El'zabar is a spiritual jazz musician original from Chicago, his father was an amateur drummer but young Kahil grew up among jazz greats like Ramsew Lewis, Gene Ammons and Eddie Harris. Inspired by Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong his father bought him a drum set at age 4.
In the late 60's El'Zabar took classes the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) where he was mentored by Muhal Richard Abrams. After Graduating from Lake Forest College he studied West African Music and Culture at the University of Ghana, he was elected chairman of the AACM at age 22.
Saxophonist David Murray first met Kahil El'Zabar at a gig in the city. Fifty year later they are touring together. David Murray has a broad musical palette playing with New York avant gardists, he is a founding member of the Saxophone World Quartet with Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, Hamiet Bluiett. He has played with greats like Henry Threadgill, Sunny Murray, Elvin Jones, MCcoy Tyner, Ed Blacwell. In 1993 Murray played with the Grateful Dead at Madison Square Garden and in 1996 released an album of Grateful Dead music called Dark Star to critical acclaim. In addition to playing jazz of all forms Murray has played with musicians from Ghana, Cape Verde, and poet Amiri Baraka.
