About this event

Hike through Canadian History on McNabs Island!

Sunday August 11, 2024 - 9:30-4:00

Departure Location: Eastern Passage: Meet at A&M Sea Charters, 87 Government Wharf Rd, Fisherman's Cove no later than 9:15 AM. The boat will depart promptly at 9:30 AM and leave the island at 3:30 PM to return to Eastern Passage by 4:00 PM.

Join the Friends of McNabs Island for a guided hike through Canadian history in the SOUTH END of McNabs Island! Learn about the important role McNabs Island played for the Mi’kmaq First Nations, the early French settlers, and the British, who built several forts on the island to protect the Port of Halifax.

  • Visit Fort McNab National Historic Site, the grounds of the McNab Family Homestead, the McNab Family Cemetery.
  • Stroll along the shore of Wreck Cove at low tide and learn about the wrecks that are beached there.
  • After the tour, do some beach combing along Maughers Beach and watch the tide roll in.

Dress for the weather and island environment. Wear sturdy sneakers or hiking boots. The island's trails are rough in some places because storms have washed rocks up onto the trails. Visitors should expect to walk at least 5-10 km on this hike.

Bring sunscreen, sunhats, insect repellent, plenty of drinking water, and a lunch. Dogs are permitted but they must be on leash at all times. Smoking tobacco or cannabis and the consumption of alcohol are prohibited in the provincial park.

Everyone must get their tickets in advance. Tickets are also needed for babies and toddlers 3 years and younger, who will travel for free, courtesy of the Friends of McNabs Island.

There is NO rain date and there are NO refunds. However, in the event of heavy rain or gale force winds, OR if the park is closed, OR if Nova Scotia Public Health brings in restrictions on group gatherings, the tour will be cancelled and tickets refunded.

Cost: $40 (Adults- non-members), $30 (members of the Friends of McNabs Island), $20 (children/youth under 16). Babies and toddlers, 3 years and younger, are free but need a ticket.
