Topic: Expressing Mathematics in a Meaningful Way
Students often have difficulty communicating their mathematical ideas, both verbally and in written work. This can be frustrating for students and challenging for instructors when it comes to assessment. We will explore common errors that students make and ways to decipher their solutions, focusing on “how” and “why” mathematical errors occur. We will discuss ways to improve communication skills and increase comfort and confidence in using mathematical terminology and notation. Further, we will examine the ways in which these errors can inform our teaching as well as how students can use assessments and the feedback on them as a learning tool.
