The Department of Education Victoria invites government school-based leaders and lead teachers to participate in anti-racism professional learning.

** Please note: Places are limited to 2-3 participants per school (for all workshops), and a minimum of 8 participants is required for this workshop to proceed.** Please speak with your school Principal, Senior Education Improvement Leader or Area Executive Director before confirming your enrolment. This course is for Victorian government school-based leaders and lead teachers who can influence and advocate within their school to share the learnings and raise awareness about the impacts of racism.


The full-day workshop includes two programs: Culturally Sustaining Schools and Schools Standing Up to Racism.

The aims of the workshop include:

• raising awareness of racism

• increasing understanding of racism and its impacts

• strengthening participant skills and confidence with strategies to discuss racism with students.


Culturally Sustaining Schools:

This workshop supports school staff to develop a shared vision of teaching and learning that builds on student strengths, fosters positive identities, and sustains the diversity of cultures within the school, including:

• the benefits of culturally sustaining schools

• concepts of culture and identity

• barriers to culturally sustaining schools

• empowering student, family and community voice

• engaging in cultural self-reflection

• steps for building a shared vision of teaching and learning


Schools Standing Up to Racism:

Staff will be introduced to a range of concepts and tools that support implementation of this resource in their school context. Topics include:

• an overview of the resource – Schools Standing up to Racism

• setting the scene – the prevalence and impacts of racism in schools

• Shared understanding – Listening to the experiences of young people

• creating Inclusive Communities – action planning, curriculum links and anti-racism policy

• facilitating conversations about racism in schools

• Collective Assessment - a reflective tool for teachers and students

• lesson plans – teachers supporting students to lead their own projects in anti-racism action.


Format: the anti-racism workshop will be delivered face-to-face as a one-day workshop

Duration: 6.25 hours content plus meals and breaks

Audience: Victorian government school-based leaders and lead teachers who can influence and advocate within their school to share the learnings and raise awareness about the impacts of racism.

Cost: Valued at $540 per person, fully subsidised workshop , including meals.
