About this event

Imagine a future where more people are rolling up their sleeves to look after the River Crane, along with the green spaces and communities that surround it.

What might this be like? How might people, communities and policy-makers up and down the River Crane work together to care for the river and its surrounding habitats?

This is the first event in Caring for the Crane Valley: a three-part event series to bring together people who care about the Crane and imagine a future in which everyone can enjoy and look after the river and the local natural environments that nurture it.

These events are open to community groups and policy-makers who are taking action locally anywhere within the River Crane catchment, and is backed by Crane Valley Partnership and Thames Water. You can find out more about the other two events inc. how to sign up for each below.

The first event, "Connect", will bring together community groups and policy-makers from across the catchment to connect and share stories. Through a hands-on session in Minet Country Park, we'll share stories in small groups, make new connections, and discover what we have in common.

We'll ask: what could we learn from each other? What hopes and concerns do we all share? We're all doing important work looking after our own patches, but how does it add up to a bigger picture?

This will be a chance to inspire more community-driven change:

Frequently asked questions

How is this being made possible?

This programme is part of Thames Water’s Smarter Water Catchment programme. It is being funded by the Crane Valley Partnership, to help and encourage communities who want to look after their environment in the River Crane catchment.

Do I need to attend all three events?

No. You’re welcome to attend all three workshops, but it’s absolutely fine if you can only attend one. It’s also fine if different people from your group or organisation take turns in attending different workshops - the most important thing is that you are able to contribute.

Are the events free to attend? Can you cover my costs?

All of the events are free to attend, and we offer a £50 gift of thanks to each participant for the two in-person workshops in April and June (this can be used to compensate for your personal time and costs, or donated to your organisation). We may also be able to cover travel, please enquire.

How long will the workshops be?

The in-person workshops run from 10am-1pm, starting with a 1-hour guided project tour followed by a 2-hour workshop session. There is an optional 1-hour lunch at the end where you can meet and chat informally with others. The online workshop is 2 hours.

I’m interested, but I can’t attend - can I still take part?

We are working on ways to communicate the project outcomes as widely as possible throughout, and to create opportunities for groups who cannot attend to take part in other ways. Please contact alex.quattrone@newcitizenship.org.uk if you’d like us to keep you informed.

Organised by

New Citizenship Project is a strategy and innovation consultancy driven by a belief that, given the right opportunity, people can and will shape the things that matter to them for the better.

When we think of ourselves as citizens rather than consumers, we’re more likely to participate, volunteer and come together to make our society stronger. That’s why our mission at New Citizenship Project is to catalyse a shift to a more participatory, citizen-led society. Since 2014, we’ve worked with all types of organisations to create participatory strategies, cultures and projects that invite people to step into their power as citizens.
