O'ahu Fringe Festival
Aloha, as an all volunteer organized Fringe, our mission is to promote the development of original work in the performing arts in theatre, music, dance and all performance related art by emerging and professional artists, and to present a provocative multicultural arts festival unique to Hawai’i. And we do this for the love of the arts and to contribute to the artistic landscape and to making Hawai’i a Fringe Festival destination. So go on, be original in Hawai’i. Our very first O‘ahu Fringe Festival took OFF in November 2011, and was held in the arts district of Chinatown Honolulu. It was very exciting to see our first one take flight. This was a special occasion as we made history and became part of the world wide fringe festival family. Delighted with our first baby steps we jump started Fringe2 which was held in November 2012. Fringe shows were held at: The ARTS at Marks Garage, Ong King Arts Centre, The Creative, and at Loading Zone. Turning two was very satisfying. Now we are slowly moving forward with Fringe 3.
As for the origin of the Fringe it began in Edinburgh Scotland when a group of artists decided to create their own performing arts festival. From its humble beginnings in 1947, the original Edinburgh Festival Fringe is now a huge annual event attracting visitors and artists from all over the world. Being part of this Fringe history is a blessing. And the “Fringe” concept can be seen in various cities with each host adding their unique touch. No two Fringe Festivals are alike, but they do all have the “fringe spirit”, of having a go and creating something new for their audiences.
