Welcome to the Whitby Regatta Swim 2024!

Swim races have formed part of the town's regatta for over 100 years. Last year Ceri & Ally revived the historic Sandsend to Whitby swim and it is set to return this August.

Whether you're a regular competeter or looking for a new challenge, this event is perfect for anyone with open water swim experience.

There are 40 places available in each race.

All swimmers will recieve a warm welcome, a goody bag and hot drink at the finish line.

Distances:

Sandsend to Whitby swim (Approx 2miles) Average time to complete 1-2 hours. This is a challenging sea swim for experienced open water swimmers.

Beach Hut Swim (approx 1000m) Average time to complete 45mins-1hour. An entry-level swim along the shore past whitby's iconic beach huts.

Reserve Date: If the swim has to be cancelled due to bad weather our reserve date is Sunday 18th august 2024 at 12pm.

Requirements.:

All swimmers must

  • Be aged 18+
  • Have open water swim experience, preferably sea swimming.
  • Wear the swim cap provided by us on the day.
  • Wear suitable swimwear, wetsuits are permitted. (Fins or other swim aids that increase propulsion are not permitted).
  • Bring and use a tow float.
  • Bring an on shore swim buddy.
  • Self declare that they are medically well enough to take part.

Swim Buddy Info:

This is a point to point swim along the shore at Whitby. There is nowhere to leave your belongings at the start of the race so please bring a shore-based swim buddy who will greet you at the finish line with your clothing and belongings.

For the Sandsend to whitby swim this is a 2 mile walk along the beach.

More than one swimmer may share the same swim buddy.

You will be required to share the name and contact number of your swim buddy on the day in order to compete.

Refund Policy

If we have to cancel the event due to bad weather or dangerous sea conditions the event will take place on the sunday, if you cannot make the reserve date places are non-refundable.

If the entire event is cancelled we will automatically defer your place to august 2025, if you cannot make next year's event you are entitled to a refund (minus 50% admin fees.)

We will endeavour to give as much notice as possible but please note things could change right up to the day of the event, and even during the race. If conditions become dangerous we reserve the right to cancel the race at any point for the safety of our swimmers and safety crews.

You may cancel your booking up to 30 days before the event, Eventbrite fees will be deducted from your refund. After this point tickets are non-refundable.

Entry Information:

All entrants will recieve an information pack via email one month before the event. This will include more details on event timings, parking and everything you need to know to enjoy the day.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I park?

There are a number of public car parks in both Whitby and Sandsend we will provide more information in your race entry pack. Please note that the Whitby Regatta gets very busy so allow plenty of time to park.

I have only swam in lakes before can I take part?

We strongly recommend getting some sea swimming experience before taking part in this race as there could be currents and breaking waves to contend with.

What safety cover will there be on the day?

We have a brilliant team of volunteer safety crew on RIBs, kayaks and power boats, we also have marshals on the beach should you exit the race before the finish line. More details will be provided in your entry pack.

Why do I need to bring a swim buddy?

Both races are a point to point swim, ended at a different location to the starting point. your swim buddy will be responsible for your belongings on the day and bringing them to the finish line.

Can I bring a dog?

There is a seasonal dog ban in place on some stretches of the beach so we do not recommend bringing a dog.
