Event Description

This course aims to explore Sexual and Gender diversity and some of the issues we might be faced with in schools. We will be exploring what LGBTQIA+ means and the individualisation between gender and sexuality. We will be considering the language we hear and use, including what is acceptable and appropriate. Once we have explored some of the basic understandings about LGBTQIA+, including how it might impact on pupils and their families, we will look at some best practice and ways of supporting pupils who identify in this way in schools. This course is to enable staff to become more aware of LGBTQIA+ themes and issues and to enable some basic understanding. It will also point people to the right organisations if they need a more specialised intervention.

Aims/Objectives

To have an understanding of the meaning of LGBTQIA+ and some of the language connected with it.

• To be able to identify the difference between gender and sexual identity.

• To understand some of the impact in individuals and their families.

• To be aware of some of the issues that may need to be addressed in schools and gain an understanding of how staff can support students experiencing LGBTQIA+ issues.

• To know where to signpost if necessary.

Outcomes

For the trainee to be more aware of LGBTQIA+ issues and to feel more comfortable supporting pupils identifying as LGBTQIA+. The trainee will be more aware of the appropriate language to use and how to support pupils, and perhaps families, in school.
