Uncovering the Generations: a journey to explore your family history

This comprehensive 2-hour workshop introduces you to researching and writing or recording your family story, including providing guidance on the options and resources available. See below for detailed information on what is included.

Introduction to your Family Story

• The importance of family stories - understanding the impact of preserving your family history for future generations
• Identifying your own personal goals: what do you want to achieve by documenting your family story?
• Using online resources such as Ancestry and Findmypast for genealogical research – and how they can help us
• Use of photos and artefacts
• Talking to people
• Using local and national resources to support your research, e.g. trade directories, newspapers
• Creating your family tree
• Methods for recording and preserving your family history
• Ethical and legal issues e.g. sensitivity and copyright
• Guest appearance from someone who has already been through this journey
• Developing a plan for your project

Course Format:

The course will be delivered through one online session of two hours, with teaching and presentations, group discussion and Q&As. Participants will have access to a dedicated FB community so they can interact with fellow participants after the session, if they wish, and receive a top tips guide at the end.
