In recent times, the concept of intersectionality has gained significant attention, but how does it manifest in the interpreting profession, and what impact does it have on both interpreters and the individuals we interact with?

This session offers a safe and open forum for discussion, allowing language service professionals to explore these questions, share their experiences, and reflect on their responsibilities within the interpreting field. By the end of this session, participants will not only have a better understanding of intersectionality but will also gain practical insights to positively influence the broader interpreting profession.

Session Highlights:

Understanding Intersectionality in Interpreting:

Explore the concept of intersectionality and its relevance to the interpreting profession.

Discuss how various aspects of identity intersect and influence our experiences.

Recognising Our Multiple Identities:

Reflect on your own diverse identities and how they impact your professional interactions.

Consider the implications of the space you occupy in both personal and professional contexts.

Being Mindful of Others' Identities:

Learn strategies to be more aware of different facets of people's identities when providing language services.

Understand the importance of adaptability and supportiveness in interpreting practice.

Impact on the Profession:

Examine the collective impact of interpreters on the interpreting profession.

Identify areas where positive changes can be made to promote inclusivity and cultural competence.

Learning Outcomes:

Self-Reflection: Participants will gain insight into their own multiple identities and their significance in their professional roles.

Enhanced Awareness: Attendees will become more attuned to the diverse identities of those they interact with, allowing for more adaptable and supportive interpreting services.

Professional Responsibility: By the end of the session, participants will be equipped to consider and implement positive changes within the interpreting profession to promote inclusivity and cultural competence.

About the trainer:

Azaria is an Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Consultant, and works with deaf and interpreting organisations. She has been a Registered Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI) for 9 years. She currently works in a VRS company as interpreting team leader and EDI Officer.

She has facilitated training for interpreters in the UK, Europe and internationally, on ‘Race and Interpreting’, and other EDI related topics. She recently presented at this year's WASLI conference in South Korea about the lack of EDI training for interpreters, pre and post qualification. This followed on from her presentation on a similar topic at EFSLI’s #Awkward conference in 2022.

Azaria is one of the Directors of the Interpreters of Colour Network (IOCN) and believes in promoting their mission of ‘support, educate and celebrate’, to address the under-representation of people of colour and other marginalised groups within the interpreting and translation profession.
