Training - Therapeutic Processing & Integration of Trauma (NCPS Quality Checked)

Therapeutic processing and integration is part of Phase 2 and 3 of the 3-Phase Trauma Model (developed by Janet and later Herman). Processing trauma isn't suitable for all clients, and usually is only done when enough therapeutic, emotional and physical safety has been established. We will also explore when NOT to process, as well as briefly look at various models to process (depending on prior training of the therapist).

We will go through and practice with several key indicators to increase therapeutic safety when doing the potentially challenging work of processing, including:

  • Titration
  • Honouring the window of tolerance
  • Incorporating safety techniques (when needed)
  • Pendulation/ oscillation

We will also briefly practice with recognising resources that may naturally come up when processing and integrating trauma. Additionally, we will cover some of the basics of TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), intrusive thoughts, and see how you might incorporate this into your practice. There will be some demonstrations of various ways of working, to shine a light on you might use the techniques.

Trauma is often referred to as particular events (such as physical or sexual abuse, car accidents, medial diagnosis, etc.). But trauma is just as much (or even more so) the impact that the event has on the nervous system and body. This impact ranges from flashbacks, to nightmares, avoidance strategies (in order to stay safe), hyper-arousal and negative thoughts about ourselves, others and/or the world. Trauma therefore comes with survival states, such as fight, flight, freeze, disconnect, please & appease and flop. These states will show themselves in the counselling or therapy room.

Our trauma trainings therefore focus on recognising these survival states within clients (and ourselves!) and supporting them to return to an increased state of regulation, when helpful. The trauma trainings are based on the 3-Phase Trauma Model and Polyvagal Theory, which prioritises the therapeutic safety for the client (and professional!) before potentially processing and integrating the traumatic experience. This means that it is often helpful to first support clients to experience less flashbacks or nightmares, to feel safer within themselves, their bodies, and the world around them, before we might process the trauma.

All our trainings are integrative and experiential in nature and is suitable for any professional who works with traumatised clients. This includes student and qualified counsellors, psychotherapists, art therapists, psychologists, social workers, GP's, psychiatrists, probation officers, nurses and any other mental health professional. All our trauma trainings are taught by qualified, experienced and registered counsellors/ psychotherapists who are trauma specialists in their own right, whilst also holding a teaching qualification. They teach from experience, as well as their knowledge which they accrued through a variety of trauma qualifications.
