Tim Jickells is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA, retiring in 2018 after more than 40 years of teaching and research work all connected to the natural environment. He has published many scientific papers on wetlands and oceanography. He now lives in Wells-next-the-sea enjoying walking and cycling and is also a member of the Broads Authority and a trustee of How Hill.
Do you ever think of the North Norfolk coast being a complex series of interconnected environmental systems linked by the movement of water and sediment? The are represents a globally important wetland ecosystem where the flow of sediments and key nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, sustain the saltmarshes, providing flood protection, vital habitat and carbon storage. What is currently known about these processes? How have they evolved over time and may change in the future, depending on both the decisions we make about the management of the coast, and the impact of climate change? All these questions will be discussed at my talk.
