We are excited to invite you to the first session of our new interdisciplinary research workshop series at the School of Environment, Education, and Development (SEED). This initiative aims to explore the dynamics between universalism and particularism in urban studies, providing a space for postgraduate and early career researchers to exchange insights and discuss methodological approaches that respect contextual differences.
In this session, we will critically reflect on how theories—often developed in Global North contexts—are applied in research on Global South cities. We will explore both the successes and limitations of these frameworks and discuss strategies for navigating these tensions.
We are honored to host Prof. Mary Lawhon, a leading geographer and political ecologist, as our keynote speaker. Her work examines infrastructure, environmental politics, and theorizing from Southern contexts. She will share insights from her extensive research on urban theory and alternative futures.
This workshop series is designed to be an interactive space for discussion and networking, so we encourage you to bring your own experiences and challenges related to theory application in your research.
