The Great South Devon Book Swap

Hey, bookworms! You can never have too many books, right?? Except when you do. So, a few of South Devon's independent bookstores have joined with Things Happen Here to bring the book lovers in the region together for an afternoon of swapping books.

Bring up to three gently read books and exchange them for up to three exciting new-to-you reads. Don't miss this opportunity to refresh your bookshelf and meet like-minded bookish neighbours. Who knows what hidden literary gems you'll uncover.

The Great South Devon Book Swap will be taking place at the start of Independent Bookshop Week (15-22 June). To celebrate, all attendees will be entered to win a "South Devon Book Lovers" package, including book vouchers to some of your favourite participating South Devon independent bookshops, tickets to upcoming book events and more. All you need to do to enter is register here and come along with your books on June 16!

Frequently asked questions

How does the book swap work?

Each attendee can bring up to three books to the swap. Each attendee can leave with up to three new-to-you books at the end of the swap. In between, your books will be added to a loosely organised table for everyone to browse, discuss and eventually take home.

What books can I bring?

You can bring any three books you own from across any genre of fiction, nonfiction and children's books. Just make sure they are complete - no missing covers or pages, please.

Do I need to stay for the full 2 hours?

Nope. Once you're happy with your swap, you're welcome to head home. But we hope you'll stick around for a bit to enjoy the bookish chit chat and vibes.

When will you announce the prize winners?

Everyone who registered and attended the event will be entered to win our Independent Bookshop Week prize draw. Winners will be notified directly by email and announced on the organiser's social media account by EOD June 16.

What happens to any unclaimed books?

At the end of the event, if there are any books left unclaimed, they will be donated to local schools, libraries and nonprofit orgs across the region. If your organisation would like to receive any unclaimed books, please email Leslie at leslie@firstdraftbooks.co.uk to get on the distribution list.
