This webinar is designed for interpreters who frequently accompany patients to medical appointments, especially those with visual impairments. It aims to help interpreters improve their understanding of Orthoptics terminology and gain confidence in this area.


The training will cover medical terminology and provide practical examples to ensure that interpreters grasp common orthoptic issues and potential complications. Specifically, the training will;

  • Focus on the orthoptic assessments conducted in hospitals or clinics that interpreters may encounter.
  • Address translation challenges arising from medical jargon in ophthalmology/Orthoptics.
  • Include clinical scenarios to enhance understanding of common orthoptic anomalies seen in clinics.


The training session will incorporate a mix of theory and practice, including video content, lectures and references to clinical research.


Learning Objectives;

By the end of the training, participants should be able to;

1. Explain the basic principles of binocular vision.

2. Identify common Orthoptic anomalies encountered in clinical settings.

3. Understand the purpose behind various Orthoptic clinical assessments.

4. Feel more knowledgeable and confident when assisting patients with eye or visual abnormalities.


About the Trainer


Ashli is a lecturer on the Orthoptic BSc(Hons) and the Pre-reg Orthoptics MSc at The University of Liverpool. She is also an honorary clinical Orthoptist at Warrington hospital. Ashli’s clinical research interests are around visual function assessments in children and adults. In addition, her pedagogical research interests are around online learning, technology advanced learning and recruitment to higher education. She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and currently studying for a Professional Doctorate of Education (EdD)
