About this event

Welcome to the School Family Discovery Day at Nethercott House, Farms for City Children! If you're a member of staff at one of our hand selected Devon Schools then this is for you. A chance for you to come to our farm, nestled away close to Dartmoor - we really are a world away for the children who visit us, offering a taster day to see where your school children could come and experience a week of magic and muck. Join us for a fun-filled day of learning and exploration with your own family, see what we have to offer.

This in-person event offers a unique opportunity to get a taste of Nethercott House and connect with nature. Get ready to participate in hands-on activities in The Spinney (our own version of Forest School), visit our farm animals, and enjoy the beautiful countryside with your own, home brought picnic on the front lawn (or grand dining room in bad weather). Make sure you bring your wellies and clothes to play, it's a perfect half term treat for you and your family or teaching colleagues to share some of the magic together. Don't miss out on this exciting event!

We will have our pop-up shop with a range of gifts and treats to purchase as well as an opportunity to buy some farm produce. Your ticket includes a Devon Cream Tea on arrival - do you know which comes first - the cream or the jam..? Other refreshments will be on sale also but don't forget your picnic (complete with rug) to ensure you're all set for the day. We'd love to welcome you for the day10am until 3pm.

Farms for City Children is a charity enabling children from disadvantaged communities to experience the adventure of working together on our farms in the heart of the British countryside.

Children are immersed in a totally new world, far away from their everyday life. A world with birdsong, clear starry skies, fresh air, real food and plenty of mud. A world where you can see, hear, smell, touch and taste the possibility. It’s a profound experience that will stay with them for life.

This opportunity exists for children because of our amazing supporters. Thanks to them we can continue to brighten the lives of thousands of children each year. Come and see what we do for yourself!

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my dog?

No dogs on site I'm afraid - we are a working farm and as such can not host any dogs at all.

Is there a minimum age?

Not for this event. Although our school visits have a limit of 8 years old, we've purposely designed this event to be fully inclusive for all school staff and their families in regards to age. It is important to add that parents are fully responsible for their children at all times.

Can I smoke or vape on site?

We have a designated smoking spot near the car park. There is absolutely no smoking/vaping on the farm or in any of the farm buildings.

Is there suitable disabled access?

Our Victorian walled garden has some narrow gates and steep narrow paths which may be unsuitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Please get in contact if you wish to discuss further: nethercotthouse@farmsforcitychildren.org or call 01837 810025

Are you serving food/lunch?

Not lunch, no. We are looking forward to serving you a cream tea on arrival (with an option of squash/water/tea/coffee) and will have some cakes and basic drinks available for sale but we will not have full lunch on offer. We ask you to bring your own picnic and picnic blankets instead.

Where will we eat our picnic?

You can enjoy your picnic on our front lawn overlooking Dartmoor or in our dining room. We don't allow eating out on the farm so will show you where we need you to sit. Please bring your own seats/blankets as we have only limited seating available.

Is there a car park?

Yes, there will be parking available close to the house. However, we ask that you car share where possible to limit the number of vehicles on site.

What activities will be available ?

Tours of the farm, house & garden with an opportunity to pot on a plant to take home. To be able to open the day to all age groups, we have designed it much less hands on around the farm than we normally do with a school group, however, we will definitely have time to play in our Spinney!

When is last entry?

Last entry is 2pm. The event is priced per ticket, per person, so it's best to arrive as close to 10am as possible so that you get the most out of your visit if you can!

Are there toilets on site?

Yes, there is an outside toilet available.

Will the day go ahead if it is raining?

Yes, the event will go ahead, whatever the weather. Please wear appropriate clothing for the weather: waterproof clothing if wet, a hat and sun lotion if it is hot.
