Respecting Yoga's Culture

By An Indian Yoga Teacher

When: Monday 23rd September, 6.30-8.30pm UK time

Venue: Online via Zoom

What does a yoga teacher look like to you? Are they a particular size, gender, ethnicity or skin colour? When I rediscovered yoga 10 years ago in gyms, studios and through social media, I, for one, know that I didn’t see my South Asian culture represented despite yoga coming from my culture.

In recent decades, the Western world has become obsessed with yoga asana (physical postures, one element of the practice), with many of its other elements, such as yoga's ethical framework, mostly set aside. It only takes a speedy YouTube search for 'yoga classes' to see that the dominant yoga personalities are white, and the classes are movement focussed, with little mention of the mind-body-soul connection.

As an Indian yoga teacher, I strive to share the richness of the practices entwined with my culture and to uplift other teachers with whom I share this heritage. I'm holding space for this workshop for us all to:

  • unlearn
  • be educated
  • feel empowered

My teachings are with inclusivity at the core, there's no space for blame here, but there's plenty of space to acknowledge the accountability and responsibility that people who exist in the yoga space hold. You'll learn top tips, how to pronounce key words correctly, how to include the culture more in your teaching and what you need to be a true ally.

I'd LOVE you to join me but if you're not able to join live due to time difference, please still book on as you will receive a recording of the event straight to your inbox. I'm so happy you're open to join me and include me as part of your journey to growth, unlearning and responsibility to shift the yoga industry for the better.

All you need to have with you is a journal and pen, bottle of water, yoga mat, and be wearing something comfortable.

Refund policy: All tickets are non-refundable within 4 weeks of the workshop. The eventbrite fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. By purchasing a ticket, you agree to this policy.
