Training - 3 -Phase Trauma Model

Trauma is often referenced as particular events (such as physical or sexual abuse, car accidents, etc.). But trauma is just as much (or even more so) the impact that the event has on the nervous system and body. Trauma comes with survival states, such as fight, flight, freeze, disconnect and flop that often show themselves in the therapy room. It is vital that as counsellors and psychotherapists we learn to recognise these survival responses in clients, so that we can increase the therapeutic safety.

In this training you'll be taught the 3-phase trauma model and how you can put it in practice:

1. Establishing a sense of safety (physical and emotional), building a therapeutic relationship and managing post-trauma symptoms.

2. Processing memories and/or feelings

3. Integration in the here-and-now and future prospects

The 3-phase trauma model connects to polyvagal theory and we will cover all 3 tenets: Hierarchy, neuroception and co-regulation. This training will support you to recognise survival states in your clients more easily, whilst giving you some of the tools to increase safety. This is an experiential training and is suitable for both student and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists, as well as related professions.

This Training Day can be taken on its own, or as the 1st training day as part of the NCPS Quality Checked 10-day Foundation Diploma - Therapeutic Safety in Trauma. It is taught 100% Online.

Trauma is often referred to as particular events (such as physical or sexual abuse, car accidents, medial diagnosis, etc.). But trauma is just as much (or even more so) the impact that the event has on the nervous system and body. This impact ranges from flashbacks, to nightmares, avoidance strategies (in order to stay safe), hyper-arousal and negative thoughts about ourselves, others and/or the world. Trauma therefore comes with survival states, such as fight, flight, freeze, disconnect, please & appease and flop. These states will show themselves in the counselling or therapy room.

Our trauma trainings therefore focus on recognising these survival states within clients (and ourselves!) and supporting them to return to an increased state of regulation, when helpful. The trauma trainings are based on the 3-Phase Trauma Model and Polyvagal Theory, which prioritises the therapeutic safety for the client (and professional!) before potentially processing and integrating the traumatic experience. This means that it is often helpful to first support clients to experience less flashbacks or nightmares, to feel safer within themselves, their bodies, and the world around them, before we might process the trauma.

All our trainings are integrative and experiential in nature and is suitable for any professional who works with traumatised clients. This includes student and qualified counsellors, psychotherapists, art therapists, psychologists, social workers, GP's, psychiatrists, probation officers, nurses and any other mental health professional. All our trauma trainings are taught by qualified, experienced and registered counsellors/ psychotherapists who are trauma specialists in their own right, whilst also holding a teaching qualification. They teach from experience, as well as their knowledge which they accrued through a variety of trauma qualifications.
