About this event

We’re back with another exciting edition of It takes a Village - and this time we’re diving into the blue economy together with Daniel Hooft - Founder and CEO of Kelp Blue.

Kelp Blue is an organization that aims to boost the blue economy by ensuring the health of oceans and the creation of sustainable industries through large-scale kelp farming.

With an incredibly colourful career path, and over 20 years of experience in offshore engineering; Daniel came across the concept of kelp farming and was inspired by the huge possibilities it provides. The passion he developed, eventually led him to found Kelp Blue in 2020.

Their mission: Rewilding the oceans through cultivating kelp forests across the globe to draw down C02 levels, improve the ocean’s chemical balance and stimulate biodiversity in the oceanic environment.

In only four years, Kelp Blue has grown exponentially and garnered interest from across the globe. With the local kelp farm located in Lüderitz, the company’s operations have both kickstarted and significantly boosted the Namibian blue economy.

A for-profit company, Kelp Blue sustainably harvests the kelp canopy for use in agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals and textiles. Through job creation, traineeships as well as the development of the first ever “Blue School” in Namibia, the social transformation impacts of Kelp Blue are far-reaching.

We're excited for a dynamic session where Daniel shares his unique journey to where he is today, sharing valuable lessons learned along the way, both personally and as an entrepreneur. We'll also dive into the exciting prospects of the blue economy for Namibia, hear about the company's plans for the future, and discuss their overarching vision of leaving a positive impact on the world across every facette of their operations.
