The Tour of the West of the city

About this event

Prepare to be fascinated as we embark on a journey through the shadows of London's past, where tales of sacrifice, harsh justice, and historic events await around every corner. Our walking tour will lead you through the city's west, revealing the hidden secrets and forgotten stories that lurk beneath the many side streets.

Along the way, we'll visit Smithfield, a place steeped in history and haunted by the echoes of its gruesome past. Once a site of public executions, this historic square witnessed the final moments of countless souls condemned to meet their fate in several grisly ways. All this occurred under the shadow of St Bartholomew the Great, one of London's oldest churches.

From Smithfield, we'll venture into the eerie world of grave robbers, where the line between life and death blurs and the quest for knowledge knew no bounds for aspiring anatomists.

Our journey continues to the site of the Old Bailey and Newgate prison, where the walls echoed with the cries of the condemned and the clank of iron chains. Once a symbol of justice and punishment, this forbidding fortress was the end of the road for many condemned criminals.

But amidst the darkness, there is light, and our continues to the site of some more historic churches with links to Shakespeare and culminates in the presence of St Paul's Cathedral. A beacon of hope and inspiration, this majestic masterpiece stands as a testament to London's enduring spirit and its people's resilience. From its awe-inspiring dome to its magnificent altar, St Paul's Cathedral is a symbol of faith, beauty, and the power of human achievement.

As we conclude our journey through the shadows of London, we'll emerge with a newfound appreciation for the city's rich tapestry of history and the indomitable spirit of those who have walked its streets before us. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a lover of mystery and intrigue, or simply curious about the secrets that lie hidden beneath the surface, our walking tour promises to be an unforgettable adventure through London's past.

The tour will start at the St Paul's tube station on the Central Line. When you exit, use exit number 2 to your right as you emerge from the escalator. We will assemble by the entrance to the tube outside Cafe Nero.

One more piece of advice, the city of London does not have many open establishments at the weekend, so I wouldn't be drinking a coffee just before we start the tour, if you know what I mean!
