Welcome to Forest Bathing at Lauriston Castle Gardens! Join us for a rejuvenating experience surrounded by nature at Lauriston Castle. Set within 30 acres of stunning woodlands and gardens, Lauriston Castle Gardens offers an enchanting space to slow down, leave your worries behind, and to connect with nature.

Let the fresh air and greenery soothe your mind and body as you participate in guided activities designed to help you connect with nature.

Forest Bathing (from the Japanese ‘shinrin yoku’) is the calming experience of immersing yourself in nature under a canopy of trees, and being guided on a slow walk that encourages you to take in the forest through your senses.

Drawing on the practices of ‘shinrin yoku’, you will be guided through a series of relaxing sensory, breathing and mindfulness exercises to help you fully connect with nature. These include using our sense of vision, touch, smell, taste and hearing to explore our natural surroundings. During our session, we will explore the wonder and beauty of nature, the amazing world of trees, and better understand the science of how nature supports our wellbeing.

Whether you're a seasoned nature enthusiast or just looking to unwind, this event is perfect for anyone seeking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and enjoy an enriching moment of tranquillity.

Come and experience the healing power of nature with us!

The meeting place at the Group Gathering area by the Car Park. We intend to use Lauriston Castle Gardens for this session but if the weather is inclement, we may have to reschedule. Please wear comfy clothing with sturdy shoes, layers (if it’s cold), waterproofs in case it rains, and something to sit/lie on outdoors.

Your guide for the event is Dr Eve Hepburn, a certified forest bathing guide, academic researcher and author.

This event is being organised in collaboration with Lauriston Castle Gardens and Museums and Galleries Scotland. Pre-booking and advance payment are essential.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Lauriston Castle Gardens?

Lauriston is easily accessible. You can take buses to Davidson’s Mains (47) or Silverknowes Terminus (16, 27, 29 & 37) - both are a 10min walk from the site. There is a free car park and cycle racks in the grounds. Disabled badge holders may park in front of the castle.

What happens if the weather is inclement?

We run Forest Bathing sessions in all conditions with the exception of high winds, storms, heavy rain or other extreme weather (where it would not be possible to keep participants comfortable and/or safe). If we need to cancel, we will let you know ASAP and reschedule the session.

What should I wear?

Please wear long trousers and tops with sleeves and shoes or similar with good grip and ankle support. Your body temperature can significantly reduce as we move slowly in the forest so bring extra layers of clothing, a coat and waterproofs if rain is forecast.

What should I bring?

We recommend that you bring a rucksack/bag with items to keep you comfy, such as a bottle of water/thermos, sun protection, hats/gloves, and any food or medications you might need. There will be a guided relaxation so please bring a waterproof mat (a large bin bag will do) to sit/lie on.
