OVERVIEW

In this evening class, humble objects like plant pots, cooking pots, and vases take centre stage in our artistic exploration. With each session, we delve deeper into the realm of colour theory, and unravel the secrets of tone and form. We will meticulously dissect the principles of composition, all while keenly observing how light dances and shapes our perception of reality. We immerse ourselves in the art of picture-making, carefully crafting narratives within our compositions. As our journey concludes, you'll emerge with newfound confidence in your watercolour skills, and with finished pieces that capture the timeless beauty of the mundane.

TEACHING METHOD

In this group tuition led by Lucy Gogoliuk, we'll embark on a journey of confidence- building in capturing images with meticulous attention to detail, vibrant colour, and harmonious composition. While Lucy presents a structured program, she warmly encourages each participant to cultivate their own artistic voice and style. With Lucy’s guidance, you'll experience ongoing demonstrations and examples, fostering a supportive environment where creativity flourishes and individual expression is celebrated.


LEARNING OUTCOMES
Participants will learn how to construct images step by step, guided by the principles of colour theory, composition, and form and tone. With keen observation and artistic finesse, they’ll learn how to transform the mundane still life set ups into captivating artworks. They will master the art of simplifying core elements, building confidence with painting with watercolours along the way. Throughout this exploration, they will deepen their understanding of colour theory, form composition, and the interplay of light and dark, all essential in creating compelling images that resonate with depth and beauty.


STUDENT RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS / POTENTIAL EXTRA EXPENSES:

For our art materials, you'll need A3 or A4 watercolour paper or larger, either in a sketchbook or loose sheets. You will need watercolour or gouache paints in a palette, ensuring you have at least red, yellow, and blue. Don't forget paper towels or rags for blotting, and a biro or dark pencil for sketching your ideas. As for brushes, a selection of round watercolour brushes in varying sizes, especially small ones for details, will serve you well. You can find these supplies at Greyfriars Art Shop near the National Museum of Scotland or Edinburgh Art Shop in Tollcross, where mentioning you're part of our course earns you a 10% discount. For our first class, make sure to bring along your paper, paints, blotting paper, a container for water, and your sketching materials.
