The OARS and Dirk and Amelia Powell

This once-off concert sees the coming together of The OARS (Eoin Coughlan and Brian Morrissey) and Dirk and Amelia Powell for a night of foot-stompin’ contemporary and traditional songs and tunes from from Ireland and Louisiana. The OARS is a new contemporary duo featuring songwriter and guitarist Eoin Coughlan and multi-instrumentalist Brian Morrissey. Their new album, released in January 2024, was recorded and produced in Louisiana by Dirk Powell and features Amelia Powell.

Dirk and Amelia Powell are a father/daughter duo with strong roots in the bayous of Louisiana and the mountains of Kentucky. With four Grammys to his name, and a decade as Joan Baez’s ‘band’, Dirk has been regarded as a “musician’s musician” for the last few decades: Steve Earle and Eric Clapton have each given him the nickname “Maestro.” He’s been a frequent part of Transatlantic Sessions and made influential records that dig into the emotional potential of tradition. Together, they perform music of their heritage, write and craft original songs, and bring audiences the kind of soulful connection that comes from family playing together with trust, humour, and love. “God gave this one an overdose of talent.” Joan Baez

Eoin Coughlan was part of the hugely successful group NOMOS where the lead vocalist/multi-instrumentalist and songwriter found himself touring extensively around the world playing alongside the likes of Emmylou Harris, Billy Bragg, Nancy Griffiths and Baaba Maal. He is a diverse musician whose traditional inspired guitar playing brings a unique element to contemporary songwriting.   " One of Irelands fnest songwriters, he plays with a percussive style and harmonic variety that makes him stand out as a top-class player" - Ciaran Gribbin of INXS. Brian Morrissey is a renowned banjo/bodhrán/whistle player and percussionist. He is a member of the ground-breaking groups Buille and TarantaCeltica and has performed and recorded with artists such as Donal Lunny, John Spillane, Luka Bloom, Béla Fleck, Alison Brown and the late, great Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. “When I heard Brian Morrissey playing, I knew I was in the presence of a master,” – Donal Lunny.

The tunes and grooves are rock solid yet always moving. The songs arrive in the centre of this feeling, full of brave lyrics, vivid imagery, and fearless emotion. Their combination of rawness and finesse is truly rare and instantly engaging”.
