These courses are designed to help you navigate the challenges of moving to America to pursue residency as an international medical student.

Course 1: Making it in America | Excel in your electives

29th June 2024: 10:00 - 18:00

Location: Imperial College London South Kensington, London, SW7 2BX

Embark on a dynamic journey with Dr. Al-Shakarchi as he guides you through simulated cases, refining your clinical reasoning aligned with the US medical system. This is a comprehensive and unique in-person event designed to give UK Medical Students and Graduates the critical edge in excelling in their application to residency training programs in the US. This interactive course aims to provide hands-on practice and invaluable insights to ensure your success in your electives. Throughout the event, you will learn how to secure letters of recommendation, master the format of US Ward Rounds, present in the O-SOAP-D Format, and write SOAP notes. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to practice these skills one-on-one with Dr. Al-Shakarchi in a life-like ward round and receive constructive feedback. Specific details including how to approach Program Directors, liaise with other members of the multidisciplinary team, and how to stand out, will also be covered, followed by a dedicated Q&A session.

Course 2: Succeeding in the Match | Perfect your ECFMG Application

Join Dr. Haq and Dr. Al-Shakarchi for an in-depth session delving into the intricacies of the ECFMG application process, encompassed within an immersive in-person event tailored to provide UK medical students and graduates with a competitive advantage for successfully securing a place in US residency programs. Gain exclusive access to exclusive tips and a comprehensive overview of ERAS, empowering you to make sure your application truly stands out. Throughout the event, all aspects of residency and fellowship applications will be discussed by highly successful UK medical graduates who matched into top-tier programs. Pending demand and availability, guest speakers will be invited to provide unique perspectives on US residency training, including advice and guidance on how to succeed in the match and in interviews, as well as life in the US during training and returning to UK medical practice.

About the Speakers

Dr. Nader Al-Shakarchi is an Internal Medicine Resident Doctor at the Mayo Clinic (Ranked No. 1 in the USA and the World - Newsweek & US News). He studied Medicine at University College London, graduating with distinction. He also graduated with a first class honours in Medical Sciences with Neuroscience from University College London. Prior to starting residency training in the US, Dr. Al-Shakarchi completed a stipendiary Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Cardiology, exploring AI in cardiac imaging and valvular heart disease.

Dr. Ikram Haq is a Cardiology Fellow, also at Mayo Clinic. He read medicine at Imperial College London, graduating with triple distinctions in medical sciences, clinical sciences and clinical practice. He also graduated with a first class honours in Business & Health Management from Imperial College Business School. Prior to residency training in the US, he completed his medical foundation training in the UK’s National Health Service and holds full GMC registration. Previous experiences include a digital healthcare start-up and consulting at McKinsey & Co. He is passionate about medical education and has also sat on the residency interview panels in the past.
