Phonics is…?

· A method of teaching which takes a person/group on a wonderful journey of discovery where they learn how to read and write!

· Phonics teaches children the relationship between individual letters and the sounds they make.

· With that knowledge, phonics helps children to progress from recognising the individual letters and sounds to being able to blend these sounds together in order to decode and read words. For example, s-a-t is segmented but when these sounds are blended, the letters read ‘sat’.

· Phonics not only helps children to differentiate between letters but enables them to know which letters to use when writing.

· Phonics helps children to be able to read and write. Every child should have the opportunity to read and write!

· Phonics builds children’s confidence and courage which helps to unleash creativity!

· Phonics unlocks children’s passion, potential and purpose!

“For our children and for us, reading is the great pathway to knowledge and understanding and empathy. We know it to be deeply enriching and fulfilling. This path can take us on a lifelong journey, as new horizons, as new possibilities and new notions open up before us”. Michael Morpurgo
