A Reading Circle Conversation: FOOD INEQUALITY IN THE UK

Join us for an insightful online discussion about food inequality in the UK. We'll be diving into the challenges and solutions surrounding access to nutritious food for all. This event is perfect for anyone passionate about social justice and food sustainability.

In February this year, the seventh meeting of the WHO (NUGAG) Policy Actions Subgroup took place. In addition to a focus on nutrition labelling, and ‘guidelines on policies to protect children from the harmful impact of food marketing’, the subgroup addressed post pandemic concerns about school food. A growing body of evidence on school food and nutrition, particularly during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, prompted a rapid review of the available literature with the objective of drafting a new set of recommendations to Member States on ‘developing an enabling food environment to develop healthy diets and nutrition.’ This obviously applies the development of effective school food and nutrition policies.

“Our research shows that there are now, quite shockingly, more food banks inside of schools than outside of schools in England. In recent years inflation has sent the cost of essentials spiralling, while other forms of state support have withered due to swinging cutbacks.

Schools are on the frontline in responding to food poverty and many are offering crisis services to struggling families.”

(Dr William Baker, University of Bristol cited in the Independent 17 April 2024)
