This 2 day training is held on Zoom and will be a mix of theory and practise, it is an interactive programme and we encourage the use of camera and headset.

For those learners looking to pursue to ILM Level 2 Award in Effective Mentoring Skills, we would have an extra tutorial hour to cover Induction and Assignment Requirements. Level 2 learners will be required to submit 2 assignments as part of the qualification.


Course description

The workshops will develop your understanding of mentoring and the skills of a mentor to enable you to adopt a mentoring style of leadership. These workshops are highly interactive with practice sessions to develop and embed skills and build confidence, breakout rooms will be used online so that you can put the tools and techniques into practice with others on the programme.

The topics covered include:

  • The role and benefits of an effective mentor
  • Potential barriers and how to overcome them
  • The role of a manager as a mentor
  • Develop key mentoring skills – listening, questioning, silence and building rapport to engage colleagues
  • Key structure and skills required to undertake mentoring
  • Mentoring as a manager
  • Use mentoring language to enhance communication and develop productive relationships with colleagues
  • Set compelling outcomes for yourself and others to maximise personal and professional development
  • Work within the mentoring contract and ethical boundaries
  • Goal setting, record keeping and reflective practice

For ILM Level 2 learners only: Two written assignments that takes approximately 3-6 months to complete. The first assignment is a written piece of work about the role of a mentor which has a word limit of 2200 words. You will have three hours of mentoring to do, with an hour of supervision with your personal tutor to give you feedback on how you are doing. You will then write up your sessions in a diary format, which forms your second assignment.
