INTRODUCTION

Acupressure is the application of pressure to acupuncture points. It originates in ancient traditional Chinese medicine, based on the concept of meridians or channels carrying Qi, or energy, throughout the body. In modern terms, the stimulation of these points has effects on blood flow to the uterus, cervical dilatation, movement of the baby, release of endorphins, and helping the mother to relax.

What is “Qi”? The Chinese character has two parts: vapour, steam or gas and underneath, uncooked rice. Picture a cooking pot over a fire, there is energy in the food and steam, which lifts the lid off the pot when cooking. You cannot see the energy in the food or the steam but you know it is there. Some days you may feel you have really good energy or vitality but at the end of the day, you can feel drained, as though your energy or Qi has run out. So with acupressure, although YOU cannot feel the Qi, the woman has the sensation of aching and tingling and you will see the changes in her body as she feels less pain, her contractions feel less intense, baby changes position and the cervix dilates.

The workshop is being run by Loredana Ordam, midwife, acupuncturist, author of the book, 'Acupressure and moxibustion for childbirth' and was speaker at the recent All Ireland Maternity and Midwifery Conference.

There will be limited attendance, to ensure every attendee has opportunity to practice the techniques.

This is an 8 hour workshop, and will include lunch.
