While Dayton is a quiet community, the nearby urban centers of Howard and Montgomery counties provide a steady stream of events and things to do. Much of the action is centered in the walkable downtowns of Columbia, Bethesda, and Silver Spring, which serve as regional hubs for culture and entertainment. The area's character shifts with the seasons, with major outdoor festivals complementing a year-round calendar of indoor concerts and theatre.

• Downtown Columbia acts as a major hub for entertainment, from large-scale concerts at Merriweather Post Pavilion to community gatherings at The Chrysalis in Symphony Woods.
• The state-designated Arts & Entertainment District in Bethesda offers a sophisticated night out with contemporary shows at Round House Theatre, while Silver Spring provides a lively music scene anchored by The Fillmore.
• Unique cultural experiences can be found throughout the region, including outdoor Shakespeare performances in Historic Ellicott City and the annual Howard County Fair in West Friendship.
