Brewery Running Series® is where fitness really does meet fun.

With all events starting and ending at local taprooms, participants take each course at their own pace before enjoying live music, food trucks, games, and giveaways – all with a locally-made craft beverage in hand.

Co-founders Morgan Jappe and Nate Herrington have turned their casual idea into a national brand and thriving business. The running series has spread across 26 US states (and counting), with a team of 40+ local event directors helping to organize over 300 events a year.

Here, Morgan reveals how it all began, what inspires her, and why she describes Brewery Running Series® as a “gateway to enjoying consistent, healthy activity”.

It all started as a fun idea we had over beers. Over 12 years later, it’s a thriving business and national brand. It’s only possible because people enjoy being a part of it.

There’s no time clock and no pressure. The casual nature and frequency of our events invite people of all ages, races, body types, and athletic abilities to get some healthy activity and celebrate with others at the finish line. It’s not about how fast or how far you go; it’s that you go!

It’s important to balance the need to think big and strive to keep it simple. As we continue to grow, we know the more consistent we can be with our general event structure, the easier it is to find a groove, explore new ideas, locations, and event features, and add to participant value.

I’ll never forget our first event. It was a 5k at Fulton Brewery in Minneapolis in 2012, in celebration of Global Running Day. We rallied friends and family to volunteer, and it sold out! We had great weather, a great crowd, and the brewery host was stoked to have a taproom full of runners. Participant feedback was so positive and the success of that first event shaped everything that happened next.

I feel so connected to this community. From our participants, brewery, brand and non-profit partners, location owners and event management teams, volunteers, interns, and ambassadors – the list goes on!

There are so many positive stories that keep me going. One recent standout was from a brewery owner, who after completing a few of the Brewery Running Series 5ks was motivated to train more regularly and has improved his overall health, even losing 40lbs! He attributed this to getting consistent, healthy activity and enjoying the process with a fun community. He said the Minnesota Brewery Running Series “changed his whole life”.

We see stories like this often. Someone starts out by saying ‘Oh, I’m not a runner’, and then next thing you know, they tell you they’re training for their first half marathon!

It’s also a fun way to meet people. We have countless stories of friendships, relationships, and engagements all starting because people met at our events.

I’d love to have events in all 50 states. Our goal at BRS is to expand our reach, encouraging runners, walkers, and joggers of every age, every level across the USA and beyond to come together through our live and virtual experiences, to get some healthy activity, and celebrate at the finish line. And what better place to gather at weekends than a local brewery?

Nothing beats the full flavor of a locally brewed, IPA after a good run. From juicy, hazy, cold, and session, the range of this style of brew hits all the right moods. That’s why we put the slogan “I sweat IPA!” on a T-shirt!
