Rethinking Relationships Project

We are engaging with local African diaspora communities to have conversations regarding the future of African museum collections. We are interested in working with heritage professionals, community members, researchers, artists and other stakeholders who might be interested.

Museums care for collections of objects taken from across Africa. Many of the objects have been collected during colonial eras and have not always been represented in the most appropriate ways.

This is part of a larger project that works across four museums. Pitt Rivers, Oxford, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge, Horniman Museum and Gardens, London, and World Museum, Liverpool. We work with museum and community partners in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana and Nigeria.

Alongside these international connections we will be working with diaspora communities in the UK. We will support you to have meaningful connections to the objects and collections. This might come in the form of research, creative responses, events and celebrations or contribution to conversations regarding the care of objects.

We are here to listen, tell us what you want from the museums.

If you are interested in being involved please get in touch!
