Overview

This training is designed to help clinicians develop skills to meet the needs of couples transitioning to parenthood.

The transition to parenthood is stressful for most couples, and is often the impetus for couples seeking therapy. This training is designed to help clinicians develop skills to meet the needs of couples transitioning to parenthood. At the crossroads of research and clinical practice, Dr. Aleja Parsons will present common clinical pitfalls and challenges when working with couples transitioning to parenting, including a focus on how intersecting marginalized identities may impact the parenting transition. Clinicians will leave the training with evidenced based strategies to use in session to help support clients as they transition to parenthood.

2 CEs available to NYS LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMSWs, LCATs, NYS Licensed Psychoanalysts, and NYS Licensed Psychologists provided by Hudson Valley Professional Development, LLC upon successful completion of training.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the training, participants will:

-develop tools and strategies to help couples transition to parenthood.

-have increased knowledge and awareness about how intersecting marginalized identities may impact couples transition to parenthood.

-cultivate applied practice of presented skills.

In accordance with the NY State Department of Education guidelines, in order to receive continuing education contact hours, a participant needs to be present for the duration of the workshop/training. Therefore, participants who arrive late or leave the event early will not be granted a certificate of completion.

Dr. Aleja Parsons, PhD specializes in getting couples “unstuck” from long standing destructive patterns. She works with couples to help clarify the cycles keeping them trapped and provides tools for them to join together against the issues straining the relationship. Dr. Parsons has extensive training in working with people of color and uses a multicultural framework to help couples figure out how race and the other parts of their identities, affect their relationship.

Dr. Parsons earned her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Denver. After graduating, she pioneered programs of research as faculty at NYU and now works directly with couples as a clinician in her practice, Relationship Health Psychological Services PLLC.
