About the event

As electronic data sets continue to grow and regulatory pressure continues to increase, answering regulatory request is continuing to be a huge challenge for law firms and corporations.

Competition, financial oversight, privacy, consumer protection, tax, fraud, bribery, health care, environmental, are just a few of the areas that are under increasing attention of the authorities.

For quite some time, regulatory agencies use advanced AI and data science to analyze data sets they obtain through dawn raids and information requests. In responds, more and more law firms and corporations now use the same technology to be at par with these agencies.

As a result, technology has completely changed how a regulatory request can be handled. Parties not using technology are a giant leap behind, get higher fines, take much longer and spent more resources handling such requests.

In the panel discussion, participants will share their view on and experiences with the use of the latest AI and Data Science technology to deal with regulatory requests and investigations. Actively involving the audience, the panel will talk about the benefits and discuss how technology can best be used to mutual benefit of all parties involved. They will also address questions about the defensible application of these technologies and talk about accepted best practices.

About the speakers

Michiel Crombeen

Michiel works as a Forensic Technology and E-Discovery Specialist at the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM). The AFM is the national regulator for the Dutch Financial Markets.

Michiel specializes in Investigative E-Discovery, Computer Forensics, Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), cyber security and various forms of investigations and is very much driven by technological innovations. Michiel participates in this panel on his personal capacity.

Manon Bovens

Manon is legal counsel of VodafoneZiggo and has advised a broad range of multinational companies in complex cases before the European Commission and the ACM. Prior to VodafoneZiggo, Manon worked for law firm Stibbe.

Manon's practice covers all areas of competition law, including cartel investigations. She provides advice and training on competition law compliance and has a broad experience in advising on internal investigations and the use of legal tech.

Vincent de Bruijn

Vincent is a senior associate in the Corporate Advice, Litigation & Insolvency team of law firm Nauta Dutilh. He is an expert in cross-border internal investigations. Vincent advises large multinational companies in complex international matters regarding fraud, corruption and reporting obligations. Vincent has experience litigating in both civil and criminal courts, which equipped him well to manage the many aspects of corporate crime matters and internal investigations.

Marcel Westerhoud

Marcel is co-founder and partner at investigation and consultancy firm EBBEN Partners. Marcel is specialized in digital forensics and eDiscovery and has a broad experience in forensic fraud investigation in the private and public sector. Marcel is also member of the ACEDS Benelux Chapter board.

Thom Eijken

Thom is a Senior Manager with KPMG Forensic and has international experience in fraud-risk related projects in a wide variety of sectors. He leads his team to help businesses providing insight into large amounts of (financial) data, using innovative statistical and analytical procedures. This is done in a process of helping the client identify the most critical areas of risk within their business, translating these risks to analytical procedures specific for the client's IT environment and presenting the results in a way that best fits the clients needs (e.g. graphical dashboard, written report, etc).

Johannes Scholtes

Johannes (Jan) Scholtes is a frequent public speaker and blogger discussing the disruptions and benefits of the AI and Data Science revolution for eDiscovery and LegalTech to lawyers, corporate counsels, governments and other teachers in LegalTech.

Since 2008, he is appointed as full-professor holding the extra-ordinary Chair in Text-Mining of the Artificial Intelligence group at the Department of Data Sciences and AI from the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Maastricht. Scholtes is also Chief Strategy Officer of ZyLAB. Since 1989, Scholtes has been involved in deploying in-house e-discovery and intelligent information governance software worldwide. In addition, Scholtes is president of the Benelux Chapter of the Association of Certified eDiscovery Specialists (ACEDS), focused on building a local community of e-discovery practitioners for the exchange of ideas, guidance, training and best practices.
