Welcome to the Monterey Peninsula Barter Fair! Join us in Monterey for our next barter event. We'll meet indoors at the Monterey Public Library.

Bring your handmade arts & crafts, homegrown produce, homemade food and/or skills to exchange with others in the community. Don't miss this opportunity to barter for unique items, share your skills with others and build relationships with fellow barter enthusiasts.

Note: This is an indoor event. There will be tables provided, but please bring a tablecloth and be prepared to share your space if needed.

Our barter events have been a big success, with over 80 offerings per event from an average of 30-35 barterers. It has been a delight to meet so many talented and creative people. In our post-event surveys, 100% of respondents reported being Likely or Very Likely to recommend the event to others. One attendee stated: “All I saw was joy on faces.”

Frequently asked questions

What qualifies for the barter?

Our artisan barter fairs are a place to trade homemade, homegrown, foraged or artisan items, or to barter your skills. Or bring something that you changed from its original state (glasses bought at the store are not eligible for barter, but if you etched artwork on them, they are).

What do people usually bring?

The sky’s the limit! From produce to pastries…plants to pasta…potholders to pickleball lessons. This event is about fun, socializing, and creativity with the intention of building community, meeting new people and learning unique skills. Feel free to bring your positive attitude and generous spirit.

What should I NOT bring?

The fair is not a flea market so please don’t bring items that you did not personally make or change. The venue chosen for this event does not allow open containers of alcohol, smoking, or drugs. Please leave pets at home. Cash is not necessary since we don’t exchange anything for cash.

I don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings by turning them down. How do I avoid discomfort?

Swappers should not feel obligated to accept someone’s offer, nor should they get their feelings hurt if someone turns them down. If a person declines, consider offering a three-way trade (identify something they would like and offer that person something you are bartering).

If I’m bartering smaller value items, how do I decide how many items to package in a group?

Consider packaging your barter offering in tradable value increments (not labeled as such, just a guide). For example, one package of 4 gourmet cookies = $10 OR $60 for 30 minutes of professional massage. (In which case, 6 packages of cookies can be traded for 30 minutes of massage!)

How do I know the items are safe?

All swap participants must adhere to an honor code of using the highest cleanliness standards in their kitchens, gardens and studios. By participating in these events, you assume all liability. Specifically, you agree to not hold liable barter fair host, venue owner/provider or other participants.

Can I bring a sample of my food (or other) item to share?

Absolutely! Samples help “sell” your items to attendees who might not know how much they’ll like your item. Package and present your samples according to the highest food safety and cleanliness practices to avoid the spread of germs, balanced with minimizing packaging waste.

Do I need fancy packaging?

It’s up to you how you want to present your items: use a simple container or make it fancy. We encourage sustainable packaging. It’s helpful to label your item so people remember what they got and who made it. Please include ingredients for those with food sensitivities (vegan, gluten-free, nuts).

What do I need to bring?

In addition to your items, please bring table cloth/runner to put on surface; any signage and/or supplies needed for sampling; container for your “haul”.

How many barter items should I bring?

Come with as few or as many items as you want. You can barter only one type of item or bring different items. We expect about 25-35 barterers at this event.

Is there parking at the venue?

There is 2 hour street parking on Pacific near the library. There’s also a small free lot behind the library and a 2 hour parking lot next door at 665 Pacific. There is paid parking ($1.50 per hour) 1-1/2 blocks away at 445 Pacific. Make sure to note parking signs since parking time differs on each.
