Turning (using a lathe) is a machining process where a cutting tool removes material from a rotating workpiece—usually made of metal, plastic, or wood. The workpiece spins on the lathe, while the cutting tool stays still (or moves slowly) and shapes the material into the desired form, creating cylindrical or round parts.
It’s a common and essential technique used to make everything from bolts and bushings to table legs and engine parts.
In this 2-day class:
Day 1: Students will learn about the different parts of the lathe (headstock, tailstock, tool rest, bed, chuck, etc) and different turning tools. We will go over basic safety procedures, and cover deburring, surface finishing, knurling, boring, hole making, precision and learning how to measure.
Day 2: Students will turn their own precision spinning top made from aluminum, stainless steel and tungsten to take home.
Note: this class does NOT certify students to use the lathes on their own - for anyone interested in continuing to use the equipment, further instruction will be required.
Students who take both Machining 1 and Machining 2 may take Machining 3 when it is listed.
