Pakistani and Scottish artists Naiza Khan, Marian Leven, Zara Mahmood and Usman Saeed discuss how the confluence of perception and memory informs their artistic process. The discussion will be moderated by artist Oliver Reed.
OLIVER REED
Oliver Reed is a lecturer and Teaching Fellow at Edinburgh College of Art, and Head of Arts, Center for Open Learning, University of Edinburgh. He employs digital technologies alongside traditional approaches in his work to explore geological and geomorphic features of the natural environment through memory, space and time.
The artists are exhibiting work in the online exhibition "Landscape of Memory" at www.koelgallery.com opening on 17th November 2020.
NAIZA KHAN
Born in Pakistan in 1968, Naiza Khan trained at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, and the Wimbledon College of Art, London. Naiza work involves extensive research, mapping and translation as she explores concepts of embodiment, ecology and habitation. Her work critically studies spaces in their material, societal, historical and ecological contexts. In 2013, she received the Prince Claus Award in recognition of her exceptional work and initiatives in the fields of art and culture.
MARIAN LEVEN
Marian Leven RSA RSW (b.1944) is a respected Scottish artist working from her studio in Tayport, Scotland. Her geographical understanding of Scotland and the differing edge qualities of the east and west coast is central to her visual exploration of edges, planes, concealment and space in her paintings and prints. Scottish landscapes and changeable weather inform Marian's work; her earlier expressionist paintings have given way to new abstract works evoking a sense of space and time.
ZARA MAHMOOD
Zara Mahmood is a Dubai-based Pakistani artist. Her latest body of work focuses on drawings that touch upon notions of what was, being and becoming. The images evoke parallels to the rituals and routines that constitute life on a daily basis; that leave no physical residue, impressions or marks. Her process of image-making takes form in prints on a select set of surfaces. Zara is an Adjunct Professor in Visual Communication at the American University in Dubai and at Zayed University.
USMAN SAEED
Based in Lahore, Usman Saeed is an artist, gardener, researcher and educator. He works from home in his garden-studio called ‘Bagh e Sadia’, named in the memory of his late mother. His ongoing practice ‘Gardenfinds’ is a conversation with nature, bringing into focus its subjects and subjectivities. Part of several public and private collections, his work has been shown widely in solo and group exhibitions in Asia, Europe and North America.
