Conscious Discipline - Composure & Perception
Overview
This session explores two foundational powers of Conscious Discipline—Composure and Perception—that empower educators to respond to challenging behaviors with calm, clarity, and intention rather than react out of stress or frustration.
Composure is the skill of self-control in action. Participants will learn how to recognize their internal state, pause before responding, and model emotional regulation for children. By managing their own upset first, educators create a sense of safety and stability in the classroom.
Perception focuses on how we see situations and behaviors. This component challenges educators to shift from a mindset of judgment (“They’re doing this to me”) to one of understanding (“They’re missing a skill”). Through this lens, teachers can interpret children’s actions as communication and guide them toward problem-solving and connection.
