Take an Odyssey through James Joyce's musical language with Dr. Katherine O’ Callaghan

In this centenary year of the publication of Joyce's Ulysses find out what all the fuss is about. The lectures will delve into how Ulysses can be read one hundred years on, the importance of the west of Ireland in Joyce's texts, and the songs and stories which inspired the author. We will also discuss how Joyce was in exile himself from Ireland and yet all of his texts gravitate back towards his homeland. With time for questions and answers, these sessions are open to those who come to Joyce for the first time and those who are hoping to return.

May 9: Joyce's Musical Soundscapes

May 23: Far Calls! Patterns of exile in Joyce's texts.

About Dr. O'Callaghan:

Dr. Katherine O’Callaghan grew up in Dublin, and moved with her husband and two daughters to Western Massachusetts in 2015, where she now lives in Amherst.

She lectures on James Joyce, modernism, Irish literature, and the role of music in novels in the English department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is the editor of Essays on Music and Language in Modernist Literature: Musical Modernism (Routledge, 2018, paperback edition 2020), and the co-editor, with Oona Frawley, of Memory Ireland Volume IV: James Joyce and Cultural Memory (Syracuse University Press, 2014).
