About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

In an hour-long session, Broad Street Review editor-in-chief Alaina will cover six things a good critic can accomplish in a review, the beginner critic’s toolkit, tips for working with editors, how to begin working with venues as a critic, what to expect after a review runs, and lots more. Then we’ll open the floor for a half-hour of questions featuring BSR writers An Nichols and Stephen Silver.

This class is geared toward aspiring or emerging writers in any field who want to learn more about cultural criticism and find out how to get started as a reviewer. It’s a great introduction to BSR for people interested in writing for us, and it’s also valuable for arts lovers who want to understand more about the critic’s role.

It's happening from 6:30-8pm ET on Wednesday, July 16. Tickets are a suggested $25 donation to BSR, but there’s a pay-what-you-can option for those who need it.

We’re offering this webinar alongside our more advanced session, BAD REVIEWS: How to write them and why we need them, happening at 6:30pm ET on Thursday, July 17. Regardless of your experience level, you are welcome to register for one or both. Taken together, they are an excellent connection to the BSR team and mission, and you will come away with the tools you need to start making your own review pitches. If you already have experience as a cultural writer, both sessions will deepen your skills and appreciation for the work.

If you are registering for Intro to review-writing as well as the BAD REVIEWS webinar, the suggested donation is $20 each. The webinars will be recorded, so all ticket-buyers can tune in live or later, but we recommend joining us live so you can participate in the Q&A.

Everyone who registers for the webinars will be invited to an exclusive in-person July 24 meetup for BSR staff and writers, where you can meet our team IRL, share your ideas for coverage, and learn more about our community. We hope you can join us!

As always, Friends of BSR (our monthly donors starting at $5/month or an annual one-time gift of $60 or more) attend free! If you’ve been wanting to become a Friend, this is a great time to do it.
