Discover the basics of wheel-throwing in our Intro class, where you'll create your very own tea bowls and tool crocks! This beginner-friendly workshop will guide you through the fundamentals of working with clay on the wheel, from centering and shaping to trimming and finishing your pieces. You'll learn essential techniques to craft functional, beautiful crocks and tea bowls. Whether you're new to pottery or looking to refine your wheel skills, this class will set you up for success in creating your own handmade pieces!


This class is 12 hours in total. It will meet for 6 sessions over 3 weeks.

Class dates: Tuesdays and Fridays | October 17th, 21st, 24th, 28th, 31st, and November 2nd | 5:30-7:30pm

Maximum number of students: 3


Attendees should arrive wearing clothing that is acceptable for getting dirty and possibly wet. Clay splashing from head to toe is possible, so please dress accordingly. Aprons (regular washable kitchen aprons) are helpful but not required. Hair longer than chin-length will need to be tied back for safety.


Additional Materials Needed: One 25-lb brick of cone 6 clay, Laguna 50. Cone 6 glazes are worth $50. Clay can be purchased at the studio of the event.

Instructor: Joann Kern

Instructor Bio: Joann has worked with clay and the wheel for 25 years and has studied at the college level and with production potters. She has remained an active hobbyist in functional and sculptural pottery, focusing on creating unique vessels and objects formed by the union of hand, heart, and nature's elements. Joann is the principal potter at Kittery Point Potters.
